Mrs. Fletcher's Kindergarten Classroom

What a fabulous year, we've had!  Here are some of the extra special activities we've gotten to participate in this year in our classroom:

1.  Hands-on activities with shapes.

2.  Community helper unit-- lots of visitors came to our classroom to teach us about their jobs in our community.

3.  Lung lesson--Hands-on activity (with real pig lungs) to see how our lungs actually work and how to take care of them.

4.  "Traveled" around the world and tasted food from different cultures.

5.  Learned about plants, how they grow, and then grew beautiful flowers of our very own.

6.  We got to watch how caterpillars change to butterflies before our very eyes.

 Here is an overview of our classroom academics and activities: 

 This is what our morning is like…..

Calendar time---Each morning we have calendar time where we discuss month, day, and year, weather, seasons, special holidays, etc.

Bible---our Bible curriculum begins with Genesis and the study of Creation. We also get to learn God’s word through our weekly memory verses (A-Z). I hope and pray that each child will grow in their relationship with our Almighty God and our precious Savior Jesus.

Math---we will start by reviewing shapes, colors, & numbers. We will then move on to before & after numbers, patterns, time, money, addition, subtraction, fractions, and much more.

 Phonics---we will work hard on reviewing letters & sounds to begin with and then we will start learning how to read blends, then short vowel words and long vowel words. Next, we’ll move on to learning our special sounds. This sequence of learning helps the students develop a wonderful foundation for reading.

 Reading---Students will begin reading in blend books and then move to readers. Students will read each day in reading groups and then will have an opportunity to read to their parents each Tuesday & Thursday nights for homework. As always, any extra reading you can do with your child at home is welcomed!!!

Writing---We will practice/learn to write each letter and then go on to blends, words, and sentences.

Cursive---Cursive will begin the second semester. This is only an introduction to cursive and a grade will not be taken on these pages.  

Spelling---Spelling will begin the second semester as well. Students will have a list to practice and take a test over each week. Many of their words come from the special sounds charts.

Pull-out---Music (2 times a week)

IF YOU ARE THINKING---WOW!!!---YOU ARE RIGHT! THERE IS A LOT TO DO BECAUSE THERE IS A LOT TO LEARN!!!

All-day students will have the following learning opportunities each afternoon…..

Pull-outs----Students will have the following pull-outs throughout the week: P.E., Music, Computer, Library

Unit Studies---Each afternoon all the kindergarten classes get together and learn about social studies and science. Here are a few of the units we get to study: Our Five Senses, Community Helpers, Children Around the World, America, Animals, Ocean, Plants/Seeds, and many, many more! We get to do a lot of fun, hands-on activities with these units and learn a WHOLE BUNCH in the process.

Language Development---This curriculum allows students to develop higher level thinking skills . We work on vocabulary, logical thinking, and listening skills.
