Hot off the press!
Sunrise provides opportunities for musical instruction and performance, for students, with bands and choirs for Junior High and Senior High. Each group presents 2 concerts a year, as well as having opportunities to perform for competitions, workshops, pep band, and our spring musical. The middle school and high school vocal music programs are under the direction of Mrs. Kathy Grendhal, the instrumental music programs are under the direction of Mrs. Karen Hamlin.
4th Grade Band: We are just starting out on our new instruments! I encourage all parents to set a time each night for your child to practice. We meet in the morning on Tuesday and Thursday each week. We are learning that we are part of a team and each member is responsible for learning their part. Each student makes an important contribution to the band! (Romans 12:4-5)
5th grade band: This semester we will move ahead quickly in order to prepare for junior high band. We are learning to glorify God with our music as well as our behavior. Behavior includes not only how we conduct ourselves in class, but also the prep work we do at home. Being responsible honors God and our fellow band mates.
Junior High Band: Band is 1st hour and we begin each class with prayer requests and prayer. We honor God with our time and talent. When performing sacred pieces we learn the history behind the piece and how the original composer sought to honor God. We spend a lot of time on the fundamentals such as scales and arpeggios and have periodic tests to check progress.Students in Junior High Band are encouraged and receive incentives to participate in Pep Band with the High School, but it is not a requirement.
High School Band: Our band also spends time on the fundamentals, but at a higher level. We have regular playing tests on the fundamentals and on our concert music. The high school band honors God with their time and talent performing not only concert music but also supporting our football and basketball teams in Pep Band. We are also attending the Worlds of Fun Music Festival on May 2nd and 3rd in Kansas City. See me for fund raising opportunities.
